The perspectives shared provide insight into how to begin prescribing and managing OrthoK or how to enhance your existing OrthoK practice.

Latest Innovations in Orthokeratology for Myopia Management
The presenters of Latest Innovations in Orthokeratology are Michael J. Lipson, OD, FAAO, FSLS, and Jennifer S. Harthan, OD, FAAO, FSLS, who are also the curators of this entire Orthokeratology Education Initiative.
This one-hour highly interactive course will allow participants to experience the latest innovations in orthokeratology for myopia management. Evidenced-based literature will be reviewed to highlight when OrthoK should be initiated for myopia management.
Instrumentation and advancements in OrthoK lens designs will be emphasized. Case history, corneal tomography, anterior segment imaging, and ocular biometry will be presented during case discussion to enhance the participants’ understanding of troubleshooting for OrthoK.

Why Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology has emerged as one of the leading treatments available for managing progressive myopia and axial elongation in children. For eye care professionals (ECPs), staying on top of the latest lens designs, clinical research, and patient management standards is critical to providing the most comprehensive care to children with myopia.
The Orthokeratology Education Initiative brings together leading experts in the field of OrthoK to provide ECPs with in-depth information about all aspects of the prescribing and management of OrthoK, which has been shown to slow axial elongation.
Since receiving FDA indication for temporarily correcting refractive error in 2002, OrthoK has been prescribed for children and adults as an alternative to glasses, daytime contact lenses, and refractive surgery. Over time, clinicians observed that myopic children using OrthoK were not progressing in myopia like those wearing other types of correction. Extensive study of this effect has shown myopic children undergoing OrthoK have 37-63% less axial elongation than those wearing spectacles or daytime contact lenses.
This Orthokeratology Education Initiative provides the knowledge ECPs need to care for their myopic patients using OrthoK and will serve to remove any concerns they may have to begin or build this specialty in their practice.

Michael J. Lipson, OD, FAAO, FSLS, is recently retired from his position as an optometrist and associate professor at the University of Michigan, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. His clinical practice involved specialty contact lenses: orthokeratology, keratoconus, post-corneal transplant, post-refractive surgery, and severe dry eye patients. He is the author of the book Contemporary Orthokeratology. |

Jennifer S. Harthan, OD, FAAO, FSLS, is a Professor at Illinois College of Optometry and Chief of the Cornea and Contact Lens Center for Clinical Excellence at the Illinois Eye Institute. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Education Society, and she serves on the advisory boards for the International Keratoconus Academy and the Gas Permeable Lens Institute. |
