Global Myopia Awareness Coalition Enlists Social Media Moms to Teach Parents About Myopia

Dec. 16, 2019

To teach parents about the importance of managing myopia in children, the Global Myopia Awareness Coalition (GMAC) is turning to an influential group: social media moms.

The new effort is called the #VisionMission Influencer Campaign and it runs through April 10 of next year. Its involves 10 “mommy bloggers” who will do a “#VisionMission” – taking their children to see an eye care practitioner – and then describe the experience on social media. That means blog posts, Instagram stories, and content shared on Pinterest and Facebook.

The 10 selected influencers have more than 5 million followers collectively, according to GMAC, so the #VisionMission campaign is going to put the subject of myopia care in front of a lot of eyes.

The December launch of the campaign is important because schools are pausing for winter break and the hope is that parents will take their children to an ECP over the holidays, says Matt Oerding, MBA, chairman of the GMAC and a co-founder of Treehouse Eyes, which specializes in myopia care and has 10 locations around the U.S.

Several bloggers have already made their first posts. Blogger Brittany Ashmore wrote about her own experience with myopia and about taking her daughter Leighton to see Mahdokht Davoodi, OD, at Today’s Vision Creekside, a practice in the greater Houston area. Her post describes why myopia care is important and has photos of her and her daughter on the visit. “Spending quality time with our little ones gives them a break from screen time to enjoy what really matters,” she writes.

GMAC leaders are encouraging coalition members to promote the #VisionMission content the bloggers produce.

The coalition was formed in August and is comprised of more than a dozen companies and healthcare associations. Its goal is to publicize the rising incidence of myopia and the long-term risks, along with new treatment options.
