My journey in myopia management began early in my career, driven by my passion for pediatric optometry and the urgent need to address the growing myopia epidemic. Since opening Dr. Zargar’s Eyecare in Richmond Hill, Ontario, in March 2012, I’ve dedicated myself to providing the highest level of care for my family-oriented patient base. With many pediatric patients, I quickly recognized the importance of proactive myopia management.
ROUTINE MYOPIA ASSESSMENTS AND TREATMENTS
In my clinic, I’ve always routinely performed cycloplegic refraction to evaluate the severity of my patients’ myopia. Early on, I invested in the Topcon Myah for precise axial length measurements. This has allowed me to closely monitor my patients’ myopia progression and provide more personalized care to each of my patients.
We offer myopia control spectacles, myopia control contact lenses, orthokeratology lenses and atropine. Our myopic pediatric patients adhere to a consistent follow-up schedule, which includes four appointments for axial length measurements and one to two annual appointments for cycloplegic refraction. If we observe any progression, we arrange additional appointments and explore combination treatment options.
The introduction of myopia control glasses, such as Miyosmart and Stellest, has been a game changer. Many myopia treatments can be expensive, leaving families with limited options. Myopia control glasses provide a more affordable entry point for families seeking myopia management solutions for their children. Additionally, these glasses provide relief for parents who may feel overwhelmed by other treatment options.
EDUCATION IS EVERYTHING
To facilitate the education process, I designed a comprehensive brochure outlining myopia and the treatment options available at our practice. I also offer complimentary myopia management consultations. We prioritize education to ensure that patients and their parents understand the condition and treatment options. The Myah generates a graph that illustrates myopia progression based on axial length, which we share with parents for their records. This visual emphasizes the importance of regular follow-ups and timely intervention.
Myopia remains a relatively new concept for many, making patient education one of our biggest challenges. This issue is compounded when only one parent attends appointments, as treatment decisions often require consensus. To address this, we encourage families to review the brochure together before their next appointment. Sometimes we even call the other parent during the exam to ensure everyone is on the same page.
SPREADING AWARENESS IS A COMMUNITY EFFORT
Myopia management is not just a clinical responsibility—it’s a community effort. I actively engage with parents to educate them about the long-term implications of myopia. Many parents initially view myopia as a simple prescription issue, unaware of the potential eye health risks associated with progressive myopia. I strive to change this narrative by explaining that myopia isn’t just about vision correction—it’s an eye health issue that can lead to serious conditions later in life. This conversation is vital because the risks are not immediate and it often takes time for parents to grasp the importance of early intervention.
Social media has become an invaluable tool for spreading awareness about myopia and encouraging regular eye exams. Our campaigns, especially around back-to-school time, have significantly increased interest in orthokeratology lenses. It brings me joy to see more families becoming aware of myopia management options and the impact they can have on their children’s vision.
As I look to the future, I’m hopeful that the field of myopia management will continue to grow. As optometrists, it’s our responsibility to utilize the tools at our disposal to combat this epidemic. The sooner we start these conversations, the better the outcomes will be for our young patients.
