Dr. Timothy Grant Named Brien Holden Memorial Awardee

September 3, 2024

SURFERS PARADISE, Queensland, Australia — The Cornea & Contact Lens Society of Australia (CCLSA) has awarded Dr. Timothy Grant the Brien Holden Memorial Award at the 19th International Cornea & Contact Lens Congress (ICCLC) held in late August 2024.

This award is a testament to Dr. Grant’s leading role in developing the world’s first extended-wear silicone hydrogel soft contact lens, a significant contribution that is now widely used by contact lens practitioners and patients globally. Dr. Grant’s work as Executive Director, Clinical and Regulatory, at the SEE3 Research and Development program played a significant part in the creation of highly oxygen-transmissible silicone hydrogel lenses, addressing eye health issues related to the low oxygen transmissibility of earlier soft contact lenses.

Dr. Grant has had an illustrious 31-year international career in the contact lens industry. He worked at CIBA Vision and later at Alcon following its acquisition of CIBA. He currently serves as a director on the Future Vision Foundation and Optometry NSW/ACT board.

This prestigious award was established in memory of Professor Brien Holden, OAM, a renowned pioneer, researcher, innovator, and humanitarian in the field of contact lenses. It recognizes outstanding contributions to contact lens innovation and industry. Previous recipients of the CCLSA Brien Holden Memorial Award include Dr. Lewis Williams, Dr. Steve Zantos, Prof. Debbie Sweeney, and Prof. Arthur Ho.
