Building Your Myopia A-Game
The morning began with a brand new educational session–”Building Your Myopia ‘A-Game–’” presented by RMM’s Medical Co Editors Ashley Tucker, OD, FAAO, FSLS, ABO Diplomate, and Kevin Chan, OD, MS, FAAO, IACMM.
This portion of the day was broken down into three modules:
- Module 1: Myopia Management: All Aboard
- Module 2: Getting Your Practice Ready
- Module 3: Treatment from Start to Finish
Myopia Management: All Aboard
Dr. Chan kicked off the presentation with an important question for attendees: Why manage myopia?
Dr. Kevin Chan talked to attendees about monitoring myopia patients and knowing when to taper treatment.
ECPs were urged to reframe myopia as a chronic, progressive and pathologic condition rather than an optical inconvenience. Dr. Chan highlighted global prevalence projections—which are widely expected to reach 50% by 2050—and emphasized axial elongation as the true disease process driving long-term ocular pathologies such as myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts.
Module one wrapped up with Dr. Chan breaking down how ECPs can overcome the perceived barriers associated with myopia management. He explained that the key barriers to offering myopia management are lack of awareness, scheduling challenges and the perceived overhead costs. The key here is that all of these are perceived barriers, and Dr. Chan shared some of the best ways for attendees to combat these struggles.
Getting Your Practice Ready
Dr. Tucker kicked off module two, which was focused on how attendees can get their practices ready for myopia management.
She started the session by explaining how early intervention, active listening and clear communication–free of scare tactics–are the best ways to approach myopia care. That last part is especially important, as ECPs were encouraged to implement phrasing like “eye length” instead of “axial length,” and “slowing progression” not “curing.” Dr. Tucker explained that while these nuances may seem minor, they can be essential for parent buy-in.
Treatment from Start to Finish
The final module of this session focused on everything related to myopia management treatments: risk assessment, early intervention, evidence-based modalities and monitoring and cessation.
This portion of the event also included interactive roundtables that featured different myopia case studies, as well as insights from Dr. Tucker and Dr. Chan on how to effectively promote your myopia offerings and effectively co-manage myopia with other healthcare or eyecare providers.
Clinical Industry Reviews
Throughout Building Your Myopia-A-Game, attendees also heard from leaders in the eyecare industry. Professionals from EssilorLuxottica and Ocumetra shared presentations with the audience about their company’s latest initiatives in myopia management.
EssilorLuxottica
Dr. Ryan Parker, Senior Director of Professional Affairs at EssilorLuxottica, highlighted the company’s push toward medtech, wearables and therapeutic spectacle technologies such as the Essilor Stellest. A short video shown during the presentation highlighted new advancements coming to Stellest, including both patient and professional options. The patient-facing options included expanding its product line, including Stellest lenses, Stellest glasses, Stellest Smartglasses, while the professional tools include the Stellest Myopia Suite, new Leonardo courses and the ME 700 x Stellest device.
He closed out the session by giving attendees a step-by-step Myopia Action Plan that broke down seven ways to find success in myopia management:
- Commit to treating, not waiting
- Schedule an in-office rep training
- View additional resources on Leonardo
- Register on the ECP Locator via Essilor PRO
- Order the merchandising via from Essilor PRO
- Identify patients in your schedule
- Talk to parents about myopia
Ocumetra
Attendees then watched a short video from Ocumetra on ways that they can utilize the mEYE Suite to shorten and simplify their myopia management conversations. They got a look at the different modules available–mEYE Guide, mEYE Gauge and mEYE Score–and how they can be used in tandem to help make myopia education easier and more accessible.
COPE Continuing Education Sessions
In addition to Building Your Myopia A-Game, THE Myopia Meeting included three COPE-approved continuing education (CE) courses presented by Dr. Chan, Dr. Tucker and Sheila Morrison, OD, MSc, FSLS, FAAO.
Dr. Chan presented first with a course entitled “The Dose Effect: Contemporary Treatment Considerations and Strategies of Atropine Use.” This course provided a deep dive into the clinical nuances of low-dose atropine therapy.
Dr. Chan outlined pharmacological interactions, dosage selection and evidence-based strategies tailored to individual risk factors and seasonal variations to help clinicians optimize patient outcomes.
Dr. Tucker was up next with “Combination Therapy in Myopia Management: Why One Intervention May Not Be Enough.” In this session, she explored the evidence supporting combined treatment approaches in myopia management.
Dr. Tucker reviewed trial data, patient selection criteria and treatment escalation protocols for combining optical interventions (such as OrthoK or soft multifocals) with low-dose atropine and lifestyle modifications.
Dr. Morrison rounded things out with a session titled “The Perfect Storm: When Myopia Management Meets Dry Eye.” She examined the intersection between pediatric myopia control and ocular surface health.
Throughout the course, Dr. Morrison highlighted how modern lifestyle factors—including increased digital device use—and contact lens wear impact tear film stability, equipping practitioners with management protocols to maintain ocular comfort and compliance during active myopia treatment.
