For the last nine years, I have been prescribing my patients myopia management. When I first started practicing at Lakeline Vision Source, I was introduced to NaturalVue® Enhanced Multifocal 1 Day contact lenses, a center distance lens that was a new and great option for all my younger patients.

As a practitioner, I’ve gravitated towards the NaturalVue Multifocal because of the center-distance, extended depth of focus (EDOF) design—and it’s also a daily disposable modality! Given the comfort and easy-to-use modality, NaturalVue became one of my primary treatments for myopia management. It is ideal for kids, and it allows parents to be more hands off.

An Evidence-Based Treatment Option

Talking to patients and their parents about myopia management isn’t always easy for practitioners. However, I’ve found that having an evidence-based treatment option makes those conversations easier.

My personal clinical experience with NaturalVue Multifocals has produced positive clinical results. However, having Visioneering Technologies Inc.’s (VTI’s) research from the ongoing PROTECT (PROgressive Myopia Treatment Evaluation for NaturalVue Multifocal Contact Lens Trial) study provides an added layer of confidence for my patients and their parents.

This allows me to utilize both my own clinical experience from the last seven years of prescribing NaturalVue, as well as provide reassurance to parents that there is clear data that supports the positive results of myopia management with NaturalVue.

Improving Patient Compliance

Patient compliance is always a challenge in myopia management—especially with younger patients. However, because the NaturalVue is a daily disposable option, it ensures patients don’t over-wear lenses. Ultimately, this reduces the overall risk of infection and irritation.

Over the years, I have seen clinically effective results in managing patients’ myopia with NaturalVue. The comfort and convenience of the lens has led to great patient compliance, with the majority of patients adhering to the wearing schedules.

A Treatment Option for a Wide Range of Patients

The NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal Lens offers a large RX range of power. It has a universal add power and center distance design, providing a solution for different types of patients that may not have any other sufficient options.

The EDOF design allows patients to have clear vision across a wider range of distances, which makes it more comfortable for daily use. Whether patients are regularly outside playing sports, or they’re spending more time indoors studying and on the computer, NaturalVue has been effective in allowing patients to see comfortably and perform well in activities. Given the amount of screen time facing all of us today, I feel comfortable knowing that my NaturalVue patients have enough power in their lenses for all-day wear.

NaturalVue Multifocals can also correct for astigmatism up to -3. 00D.Prescribing this lens for myopic patients with astigmatism has also been a game-changer in my practice. Having this as a tool in my arsenal makes it easier to talk about with parents, because I feel confident knowing the NaturalVue lenses will not only allow kids to see comfortably, but it will also manage myopia and astigmatism. I’ve started many patients in NaturalVue from an early age, and they do so well with them. They end up staying in the lenses long term, with no complaints of visual blurs or discomfort.

Seeing the Efficacy in Case Studies

One of the best ways to get an idea of the efficacy of the NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocals is to look at real-life case studies from patients in my practice. Here are two examples of patients who have been prescribed NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocals:

Case Study One:

  • 11-year-old Asian male, first came into my practice in 2017
  • Initial rx:
    •  OD -250 OS -250.  20/2020
    • NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal powers  -2.50 OD, OS  20/20 OD, OS
  • 2026 Rx OD -2.25-100×180 / OS -3.00-125×005.
    • New NaturalVue Rx -2.50 OD, -3.50 OS, 20/20 near and distance OD, OS
  • Both mother/father high myope; patient spends long hours on computer/studying.
  • He has been stable for nine years and prefers even his glasses now without astigmatism correction.
  • He was one of my first patients in NaturalVue. He has had relatively little change and complete comfort with the lenses. He is so happy with them that he wants to stay with them even through his college years.
  • His parents were completely unsure of NaturalVue when I first prescribed them. It was a newer lens at the time of the initial fitting, and we were going to start there and change depending on how he progressed. To all of our surprise, the patient had little change, and we were all very happy with the results. We haven’t had to change the patient’s treatment.
  • NaturalVue Multifocals allowed the child to have both comfort and clarity, where he was always motivated to continue to wear them.
  • This patient also had big growth spurts that can commonly be seen with large myopic shifts, which he did not experience.

Case Study Two:

  • 9-year-old white male started NaturalVue
  • 9-year-old: -3.50 OD/ -3.50 OS
    • NaturalVue: -3.75 OU 20/20 OD, OS
  • 15 year-old: 4.00 -1.00 x100/ -4.00-1.00×0.90
    • NaturalVue:  -4.25 OD, 20/20 OS
  • Though the patient has had some changes over six years of treatment, he tolerated a lower prescription—even with an increase in astigmatism. The patient plays sports and prefers contacts for vision. Again, it was a positive visual outcome even with increased astigmatism and without correcting those lenses. During sports, the patient still preferred vision in contact lenses.
  • For this patient, it was really important to be able to comfortably play sports, be active even and have high athletic performance. The patient preferred soft lenses and tolerated the NaturalVue lenses very well.

A Lens Built for Real Life

It is important to understand that just as we as practitioners want a lens that is easy to fit and work with, patients and parents want the same thing. They do not want to have to come in multiple times and have to deal with fitting issues or frequent changes in a child’s prescription. With Naturalvue, this process has been all too easy.

In a big practice, efficiency is really important. I often have my technicians help with adjusting lens prescriptions, and because the lenses are so easy to fit, the flow of the office is much smoother. I’ve found that it’s less chair time for me and less time for unscheduled follow-ups for the patient and their parents.

In my experience, follow ups are typically just for progression checks. Most patients find the right fit within one or two visits. Because the lens can handle all different scenarios, patients aren’t coming in unscheduled or reporting issues. Their vision is the same out in the world as it is in the clinic setting.

Natural Multifocals maximize a dynamic lifestyle while still managing myopia. My patients have good distance clarity and great dynamic vision—without taking away from acuity or contrast.

I always strive to provide the best and most up to date treatments for all my patients. When it comes to myopia management, I have enjoyed involving both kids and parents in the conversation of how myopia can affect their future vision and overall ocular health. We can’t stress enough the importance of being proactive with treatment. NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal contact lenses give patients a tool to help manage their myopia outcomes while providing great vision.
